Item Description

KAKI-NAWA - This rope, made of straw, hangs on the Kakiyama and can be grasped by a carrier when he tripps over or looses his footing. He can then cling to the rope and avoid falling down and possibly being overrun.
TEPPOU - This conductors sticks name translates to “rifle”, however it is just a long bag filled with straw.
Its lengthy appearance and the fact, that the controllers on the Kakiyama bang them together to underline their orders and give the footsteps rhythm, are probably the reason why it is called “rifle”.
TEBO - During the Oshioitori the participants fill a small basket called “Tebo“ with sand from the Hakozaki-hama beach. These baskets are then hung by the front doors to ward off misfortune in the same way purification salt is believed to.
MIZU-HAPPI - These vests are worn only to the carrying of the Kakiyama.
They are made of cotton, are mostly white and decorated around the sides with patterns specific to each district.
JIKA-TABI - ““JikaTabi,““ the traditional Japanese shoe, is one of the essential items for porters of Yamakasa (colorful ornamental floats). ““JikaTabi““ look more like socks with a rubber sole and divided toe.
In recent years, the ““Air-inflated Tabi,““ which provides similar comfort to sneakers, is also popular.
SETTA - The style of Naga-Happi (long jackets), Suteteko (loose shorts), and Setta (sandals woven from soft fibers ) will be the formal attire for Yamakasa participants during the period from June 1st to July 15th. Of course, they will attend the Yamakasa event in this style, as well as weddings and funerals during this period.
KAZARI-YAMA - In contrast to the moving Yamakasa, the decorative Yamakasa is referred to as ““Kazari-yama““ for viewing purposes. But the one in Kamikawabata-dori is well-known as the ““Running Kazari-yama,““ the sight of a nearly 10-meter-tall decorative Yamakasa in motion is truly breathtaking. After the Yamakasa festival, it will be exhibited again at the Kawabata Zenzai Hiroba within the Kamikawabata Shopping Street.
(You can enjoy the famous Zenzai dessert while looking at its magnificent display.)
KORI-ZENZAI - At Zenzai Square, “Ice Zenzai“ is sold for a limited time from mid-May to around the end of September every year. What sets it apart from regular shaved ice is the generous amount of “anko“ (sweet red bean paste) inside. Please give it a try!
